Information/Instructional Design, Definition

Information and instructional design outline the process of designing visual needs for information and instructions. For example, a pie chart provides the audience with visual understanding of statistics, making it easier and quicker to understand the information being delivered, rather then just a paragraph of digits and values.
The usage of design in instructions, such as how to put something together or mapping out escape routes, allow again for quicker understanding and guidance as to what needs to be done. Also, providing graphics to instructional information bridges the gap of language differences as most graphic depictions can be understood universally.
